Insurance 101: Understanding Your Deductible

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Understanding your deductible – the amount you pay out of pocket in the event of an insurance claim – is crucial in getting the most out of your insurance policy. Your deductible can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the total limits of your policy. Either way, you must pay the deductible before insurance policy pays out.

Here are some important things to know about deductibles:

  1. For the most part, the larger the deductible, the less you in premiums for your insurance policy. Raising your deductible is a great way to save money. But, before choosing a higher deductible, be sure you have enough money set aside to pay the deductible outright if you have a claim.
  2. Insurance differs state by state and because of this, so to do deductibles. So do your research.
  3. Deductibles apply to property damage only. There are no deductibles associated with the liability portions of your policies.
  4. Do not overlook the cost of insurance when buying a home. Houses in high-risk areas will have higher deductibles.

So now that you know more about deductibles, you will be more prepared to purchase your next insurance policy.

October Snow Storms and Your Insurance

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

After a highly unusual October snowstorm, people up and down the East Coast of the United States were left to sit and wonder…what kind of winter-related damage is covered by my auto and homeowners insurance policies? Well, standard homeowners and auto insurance policies cover a wide range of snow and ice related disasters, including:

Homeowners Insurance

•      Burst pipes

•      Ice dams

•      Collapsed roof or other damage to a house caused by the weight of snow or ice.

•      Wind damage to a house, its roof and its contents.

•      Damage caused by downed trees, limbs or other falling objects. Standard policies also cover the removal of the downed tree.

Auto Insurance

•      Car accidents between two or more drivers caused by slippery roads.

•      Physical damage to a car caused by heavy wind, flooding or fallen ice or tree limbs. This is covered under the optional comprehensive portion of auto policies.

•      A car that crashes into an object would generally be covered under the optional collision portion of an auto policy.

Standard homeowners policies also include additional living expenses (ALE) in the event that a policyholder’s home is severely damaged by an insured disaster. This covers the expenses a policyholder incurs when living elsewhere while his/her home is under repair.

But every policy is different. So it is important to contact your insurance provider to get a better understanding of your coverage.

Make Sure Your Halloween is Filled With More Treats Than Tricks

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Halloween is a night filled with fun, costumes, and most importantly candy. The night before Halloween – also known as Moving Night, Devil’s Night, and Mischief Eve – however, has traditionally been the night when children vandalize properties, toilet paper and egg houses, smash pumpkins and generally cause mischief.

If only there was a way to protect your property…

Wait, there is!

Having up-to-date homeowners (or renters) and auto insurance policies can help safeguard your possessions this Halloween. So get in touch with your insurance agent and find out if you are properly covered.

•      Standard Homeowners and Renters Insurance will cover your home if it is vandalized. And the liability portion of these policies will cover you if a Halloween guest or trick-or-treater is accidentally injured on your property.

•      Optional Comprehensive Portion of Your Auto Insurance Policy will cover your vehicle if it is vandalized. A standard auto insurance policy, however, does not cover vandalism.

Winterizing Your Home

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

The weather may not be too cold…yet. But now is actually the best time to winterize your home. To prepare your home for the upcoming winter, you should…

Outside Your Home

•      Fix cracks and holes in your foundation. Even a small crack can turn into a big problem if water is allowed to penetrate your foundation and then freeze.

•      Trim trees and remove dead branches. Ice, snow and wind could cause weak branches to fall, damaging your car, home, etc.

•      Clean out your gutters. This will allow melting snow and ice to properly drain, preventing ice damming.

Inside Your Home

•      Insulate the attic and basement and do not let warm air escape your home. A well-insulated house will improve energy efficiency and decrease utility bills.

•      Have your HVAC system inspected by a professional. The last thing you need is for your furnace to stop working in the middle of winter.

•      Check your pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have the pipes repaired immediately. Wrap exposed pipes with heating tape.

•      Residential fires increase in the winter, so be sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

•      Know how to shut off your water in the case of an emergency. Every second counts.

Many winter-related disasters can be prevented if you take the time to properly prepare your home for the freezing temperatures, snow, and wind.

Of course, one of the best ways to protect your home is with a quality homeowners insurance policy. Standard homeowners policies cover winter-related disasters such as burst pipes, ice dams, and wind damage caused by weight of ice or snow, as well as fire-related losses.

Maryland Motorcycle Insurance

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Choosing the right motorcycle insurance is not easy. You need a policy that fits both your lifestyle and your budget. While you are required to purchase a minimum amount of liability coverage, there are other optional coverages you should be aware of.

The different types of motorcycle coverages include:

Liability Coverage: This covers bodily injury or property damage if you are found at fault in an accident. This does not cover you or your motorcycle.

Collision Coverage: This covers damage (minus your deductible) to your motorcycle if you are involved in an accident.

Comprehensive Coverage: This covers damages (minus your deductible) caused by events other than a collision – fire, theft, vandalism, etc.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: This covers damages to you and your property caused by another driver who either doesn’t have insurance (uninsured) or doesn’t have adequate insurance (underinsured) to cover your damages. This coverage pays for medical treatment, lost wages, and other damages.

Additional Coverage: If you decide to add on any optional accessories such as chrome parts, a custom paint job, trailers or sidecars, you should look into obtaining additional or optional equipment coverage. These accessories are not covered under standard policies.

Some of the items that may affect premiums:

•     Your driving record

•     Where you keep your cycle (in the open or in garage)

•     Your credit record

•     How many years you have been driving a motorcycle

•     Your age

•     Previous Cycle Coverage

•     Anti-theft devices

Insurance for Your Home Business

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Your business operates from home, so your homeowners insurance is enough coverage, right? Well, no. A typical homeowners policy restricts business coverage to $2,500. And we are going to guess that $2,500 is not enough coverage for your home business. Furthermore, many homeowners policies actually exclude business liabilities. So if a client or delivery person sustains an injury while visiting your home business, you may not be covered.

So what should you do?

Step #1 – contact your insurance agent and find out how much coverage you currently have

Step #2 – Add more coverage.

There are three ways to add more insurance to cover your in-home business. The right choice will depend on the nature of your business, its annual receipts and the amount of coverage you need.

Endorsement to Your Homeowners Policy: your current homeowners insurer may off an endorsement to your current homeowners policy that adds extra property coverage and some liability coverage. This option is usually limited to businesses that have less than a set amount of annual receipts, usually around $5,000.

In-Home Business Insurance Policy: Certain insurers offer in-home business insurance policies. These are similar to policies to larger commercial policies, but with lower limits and premiums. The policy includes general liability coverage with the limit you choose, between $300,000 and $1 million.

Businessowners Policy (BOP): A small business owners policy combines a wide variety of coverages in a single policy. Consult with your insurance provider to see if this type of coverage is right for your business.

    Uninsured Drivers: Are You Safe?

    Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Almost every state requires motorists to have auto liability insurance, which pays the other driver’s medical, car repair and other costs when the policyholder is at fault in an auto accident, before they can legally get behind the wheel. Only New Hampshire does not have a compulsory auto insurance liability law.

Yet these laws continue to prove ineffective in reducing the number of uninsured drivers in the United States, a number that in 2009 was as high as 13.8% (one in every seven drivers). In Maryland, the percentage of uninsured motorists was over the national average, hitting 14.9%. Mississippi was the worst with 28.0% of its drivers uninsured.

Click here to view the uninsured driver info graphic.

If you get in an accident with an uninsured driver, you may be out of luck and stuck paying for costly repairs yourself. However, you can purchase uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, which reimburses policyholders in an accident involving an uninsured, underinsured or hit-and-run driver. Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia have mandatory requirements for uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.

    Auto Insurance

    Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Disaster can strike at any moment, without warning.

A motor vehicle injury occurs on average every 14 seconds and  an American is treated in an emergency room for crash-related injuries every 10 seconds. Motor vehicle related death occurs on average every 16 minutes, resulting in 96 deaths a day and making auto crashes the leading cause of death for individuals between the ages of three and 34.

Statistics like these can be scary, but more importantly, they get you thinking. Are you protected?

When you buy an auto insurance policy, you are buying a package of individual coverages. Each coverage protects you against different types of losses. Once you understand the various coverages, you can decide which ones to include in your personal insurance package. You can also determine the limits of coverage you will need. The following are some common coverages found in an auto policy. NOTE – Your policy may not contain all of these coverages.

Bodily Injury (BI) Liability Coverage pays, up to the coverage limits, for damages due to injury or death of others in a vehicle accident for which you or the operator of your vehicle are legally responsible. It also pays your legal defense costs. In most states this coverage is mandatory.

Property Damage (PD) Liability Coverage pays, up to the coverage limits, for another individual’s vehicle or property that has been damaged in an accident for which you or the operator of your vehicle is legally responsible. In most states this coverage is also mandatory.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) pays, up to the coverage limits, for reasonable and necessary doctor, hospital and funeral expenses for you and your passengers injured or killed in an accident, regardless of who is at fault. Payments are usually limited to one to three years after the accident. This coverage is optional in most states without no-fault insurance systems.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists (UM/UIM) Coverage pays up to the coverage limits for pain and suffering which is not covered by medical, disability and PIP. Underinsured motorist coverage pays for bodily injury to you or your family resulting from the negligence of someone whose liability insurance limits are insufficient. The definition of an underinsured motorist varies from state to state.

Collision Coverage pays, up to the coverage limits, for damage to your vehicle or a vehicle you are operating caused by a collision or rollover. This coverage is usually required if you have a vehicle loan.

Comprehensive Physical Damage Coverage pays, up to the coverage limits, for damage to your vehicle or any vehicle in your custody resulting from theft, fire, vandalism, flooding, hail or other perils (but not damage by collision or overturning). It is usually required if you have a vehicle loan.

Rental Reimbursement pays up to a specified amountfor rental vehicle charges while your vehicle is being repaired for damage covered under your policy. If youprefer not to incur the cost of renting a vehicle yourself and cannot be without a vehicle while yours is being repaired, you might consider this coverage.

Towing and Labor covers some costs incurred for services rendered at the place of breakdown or for towing to a repair shop. It covers the delivery of gas, oil or a battery, but not the cost of these items. If you lock the keys in the vehicle or need a tire changed, this may also be covered. These services are often included in auto club memberships, which can result in unnecessary duplicate coverage.

So contact your insurance agent and find out if you are properly covered.

    Do You Need Life Insurance?

    Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Did you know September is Life Insurance Awareness Month? Well, it is. And it makes you think; are you properly insured?

Financial experts all across the country agree that life insurance is not only important incase you pass away, but it is also the cornerstone of any sound financial plan. A life insurance policy can be an important tool in the following situations:

Replace income for dependents: If people depend on your income, you need life insurance. If you die unexpectedly, you need to be sure your family is properly protected. A life insurance policy provides replacement income for dependents, like your children or spouse.

Pay final expenses: Funeral and burial costs, debts and medical expenses are not covered by health insurance. Life insurance can give your loved ones the extra money they need to cover these expenses.

Create an inheritance for your heirs: You can create an inheritance by purchasing a life insurance policy and naming your children, spouse, favorite charity, or whomever, as beneficiaries.

Pay federal “death” taxes and state “death” taxes: Life insurance benefits can pay estate taxes so that your heirs will not have to liquidate other assets or take a smaller inheritance. Changes in the federal “death” tax rules between now and January 1, 2011 will likely lessen the impact of this tax on some people, but some states are offsetting those federal decreases with increases in their state-level “death” taxes.

Create a source of savings: Some types of life insurance create a cash value that, if not paid out as a death benefit, can be borrowed or withdrawn on the owner’s request.

Tips for Keeping Your Homeowners Insurance Rates Low

    Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

A homeowners insurance policy consists of coverage for your dwelling and your personal property. It also includes liability insurance, which pays for injuries to other people or damages to their property accidentally caused by you, your family or your pets. You also can buy several types of additional insurance for property that is not listed in your homeowners policy or for perils not covered – such as flood – for which you need a separate policy. You do this by either buying a separate policy or by adding an endorsement or rider to your policy.

But we cannot always afford the coverage we need. So how can you reduce your insurance premiums without reducing your coverage?

There are some simple steps you can take to reduce your homeowners premiums. They include:

Raising Your Deductible: A deductible is the amount you pay before the insurance starts to pay for your loss. Since the purpose of insurance is to pay for the losses you cannot afford, raise your deductible to a limit that you could handle in case of a loss.

New Home: If your home is less than 10 years old, you may be eligible for a new home discount.

Making Your Home Safer: You may be eligible for a discount if you have a burglar and fire alarm systems and/or sprinkler systems. Monitored systems will earn a bigger discount than unmonitored systems.

Construction Material: When you buy a home, look for fire-resistant construction, such as brick, masonry or rock. You may pay a lower premium for hail-resistant roofs, such as those made of concrete tile, while wood roofs may bring a surcharge. Check the location of the nearest fire department, and avoid buying in flood areas. Non-Smoker Discounts

By following these few simple steps you could see a significant reduction in your homeowners premiums.
